MATCH REPORT
Arsenal registered their third Wembley win, equalling Bolton's record, in a defence‑oriented Final against Liverpool.
The 2‑0 scoreline was a fair reflection of the play, though Liverpool were certainly on top in the early stages. After eighteen minutes, however, Arsenal scored their opening goal. Goring lured Hughes away from the midfield, leaving the Liverpool defence open and allowing Lewis to slide unnoticed into the penalty‑area, take Logie's measured pass into his stride and shoot unerringly into the net past Sidlow.
Liverpool struck back immediately, with Stubbins twice desperately close with headers, but Arsenal remained calm and unruffled in defence and by half‑time the impression had emerged that, psychologically, they held the upper hand.
Swindin, for Arsenal, made a wonderful save from Payne early in the second half after Liddell's fine centre had left him all at sea, and then a series of Arsenal counter‑attacks served as a prelude to a second goal after sixty‑three minutes. Mercer began the movement which ended with Lewis running in to beat Sidlow with a low shot into the corner.
Liverpool refused to admit defeat and beat against the Arsenal defence until the end. Three times they nearly scored, with Liddell and Payne prominent, but their last‑minute effort was in vain. Forbes at half‑back had been outstanding for Arsenal, while Mercer's leadership had been as impressive as ever.
